Description
This full-day excursion to Arouca combines history, culture, and nature. Begin with a walk across the 516 Arouca Pedestrian Suspension Bridge, an engineering feat suspended 175 meters above the Paiva River. The bridge’s 127 independent metal walkways create a unique sensation of walking above the landscape while offering views of waterfalls and cliffs.
After crossing the bridge, enjoy lunch at a typical restaurant in Serra d'Arouca, featuring traditional dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients that highlight the region’s culinary heritage.
Next, explore the Passadiços do Paiva, an 8-kilometer wooden boardwalk along the Paiva River. This trail allows you to experience the area's diverse flora and fauna within the UNESCO Global Geopark.
Arouca’s slate houses, made from local mountain materials, reflect centuries-old architectural traditions. Time permitting, visit a nearby village to observe these homes and local cultural practices.
The day ends with a visit to the Museum of Sacred Art and the Monastery of Santa Maria in downtown Arouca. The museum’s collection of religious artworks offers insight into the region’s spiritual and cultural history.
