Description

Travel from Porto to the Passadiços do Paiva by comfortable transportation to explore one of northern Portugal’s most notable river gorges. The route crosses the UNESCO Global Geopark of Arouca and offers panoramic views of waterfalls and cliffs between the river beaches of Areinho and Espiunca.

Walk the scenic path featuring the famous zigzag stairs and stop at Praia do Vau to rest. The trail offers insights into the area's biology, geology, and archaeology with key geosites including:

  • Paiva Gorge (G36)
  • Aguieiras Waterfall (G35)
  • Vau River Beach (G30)
  • Salto Gola (G31)
  • Espiunca Fault (G32)

At Praia de Espiunca, enjoy lunch (if selected) and relax by the clear waters of the Paiva River. On the return trip, visit the Monastery of Santa Clara de Arouca and sample traditional conventual sweets from the region.

Important Notice: Due to recent wildfires, approximately 2 miles of the walkways are currently inaccessible. However, most of the trail remains open, ensuring an enjoyable experience on the most scenic sections.
