Description

Located on Rua de Belomonte, the Museu das Marionetas do Porto opened in 2013 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Teatro de Marionetas do Porto. Directed by João Paulo Seara Cardoso (1956-2010), the museum preserves and updates the artistic heritage of his puppetry work. It was originally installed at Rua das Flores no. 22 before moving to its current location in 2016.

The museum features puppets, stage props, and symbolic objects used in performances, along with stories behind them. Since 2017, it has prioritized accessibility with features such as tactile exhibits and audio descriptions, making it an inclusive space. The building’s design, by architect José Gigante, along with the exhibition strategies, focus on engagement and social relevance.
