Description
Step into the British Factory House, the last of its kind in the world. Discover the history of this unique building, designed by John Whitehead, the British consul in Oporto, in the Neopalladian style. Built between 1786 and 1790, the Factory House was conceived as a place of elegant and civilized entertainment, and as a remarkable symbol of the Port Wine trade.
Explore the lavish interiors, with generously proportioned rooms that echo the contemporary taste for grand balls and refined social gatherings. Learn about the building’s history, from its occupation by Napoleon’s forces in 1809 to its current role as a social club for British Port Houses.
Discover how the Factory House has always been a place for social gatherings. The rooms are used regularly for receptions, dinners, and celebrations, and every Wednesday, representatives meet for lunch and a glass of Vintage Port in the company of guests from the local and international community.
Learn how the Factory House’s main purpose today is to inspire the appreciation of Port, particularly of Vintage Port, one of the world's great classic wines.
