Description

Visit Cockburn’s cellars, also called ‘lodges’, which house the largest wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia’s historic quarter, located across the Douro River from Porto. Observe coopers working Monday to Friday, 9 am to 4:30 pm, carefully dismantling and rebuilding barrels stave by stave for maintenance.

Inside the solid granite walls of Cockburn’s lodge house, you’ll find 6,518 seasoned oak barrels of maturing Port and an additional 10,056 barrels in tanks and vats. This extensive stock is used to create Cockburn’s famous Ports, including the Special Reserve.

The guided tour offers an authentic experience of a working Port cellar. Begin at the Cellars museum, which traces Cockburn’s 200-year history, highlighting the families behind the brand, their vineyards in the Douro Valley, and the production of their renowned Ports.

Continue through the active cellar areas, featuring thousands of oak barrels stacked four high, including the longest ageing gallery of any Port cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia. Learn about the importance of maturing Port in seasoned wood and the vital role of the cooper.
