Description
This workshop offers an authentic cultural experience that goes beyond painting tiles. Discover the history, symbolism, and craftsmanship of Portuguese azulejos while creating your own hand-painted ceramic tile to take home.
Cristina, a Porto-based artist and graduate of the University of Porto’s Faculty of Fine Arts, has extensive experience in Portuguese tile heritage. She collaborates on educational and cultural projects, including workshops with the Bank of Materials of Porto City Council, which preserves the city’s architectural heritage.
In this relaxed workshop, Cristina introduces the story of Portuguese tiles, covering their origins, artistic influences, and their presence in Porto’s streets, churches, railway stations, and historic buildings. Through examples and demonstrations, you gain insight into one of Portugal’s traditional art forms.
You will then paint your own ceramic tile using traditional Portuguese techniques and motifs or create an original design. Cristina guides you step by step, sharing techniques while encouraging your creativity. No previous experience is required, making the workshop accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
