Multi-day Excursions in Porto

If you’ve got a bit more than a day to explore, multi-day excursions from Porto give you the chance to really breathe in the north of Portugal. Think slow mornings wandering through the Douro Valley vineyards, evenings beside the river with a glass of port you probably shouldn’t finish on your own, and afternoons stumbling upon tiny villages that don’t show up in most guidebooks.

One of my favorite routes is heading east towards Régua and Peso da Régua; the views along the Douro River aren’t just postcard-worthy, they’re actually breathtaking when you’re standing on those steep terraces. Go in spring or fall to avoid the scorch and the crowds. And don’t rush the wine estates. I always find at least one quinta that’s a little off the beaten path where the owner will happily chat about their grapes and why the local schist soil matters.

Or you could swing north into Braga and Guimarães, both cities with way more personality than you might expect. The historic centers have this lived-in vibe that’s impossible to fake. It’s also a good chance to load up on those regional dishes you haven’t tried yet (I’d recommend trying bacalhau à Braga in a local taverna). Just one tip: when booking, check if your excursion includes small group setups because bigger buses can kill the charm of the region. Porto itself is great, but giving yourself a couple of days outside the city changes the whole trip for the better.
