Family-Friendly Experiences in Porto

Porto isn’t just for wine lovers and history buffs. Bring the kids along and you’ll find plenty around that keeps little ones entertained, too.

One of my favorite spots with the family is the Jardim do Passeio Alegre. It’s a riverside park in Foz where kids can chase ducks or play in the small but well-kept playground. Plus, you can grab a coffee from a nearby kiosk and relax while keeping an eye on them.

If rain hits, no worries. There’s the World of Discoveries museum downtown, which is like stepping into the history of Portuguese explorers with tons of interactive exhibits. My nephews loved the touchscreens and even the virtual ship ride.

For something a bit quirky, check out the Sea Life Porto Aquário. It’s not huge but enough to amaze any curious kid with colorful fish and tanks where they can almost reach out and touch the creatures. Tip: go early on weekends to avoid the crowds.

Porto’s tram rides are a nice slow change of pace and kids usually get a kick out of the vintage vehicles rolling through the city. Grab a spot near the driver and let the little ones imagine they’re captains navigating through narrow streets. Seriously, you’ll find plenty to keep the whole family happy without the usual tourist traps.
